Keurig Coffee Maker Review - The K-Cup

Keurig K-CupAbout twice the size of a cup of half-and-half, Keurig K-Cups contain everything you need to brew a cup of coffee (or tea) in the Keurig coffee maker. A pre-measured amount of ground coffee is put into each K-Cup, just enough for a single cup. K-Cups are placed into the Keurig without opening them. Once inside, the Keurig pierces the top and bottom of the cup which keeps all the mess inside the K-Cup.

Keurig K-Cup InsideMy own curiousity got the best of me so I cut a used one open to view a cross-section and see what was inside. As you might expect, there was coffee suspended above the integrated paper filter. According to Keurig, by forcing pressurized water through this cup at the right pressure and temperature, the ideal cup or coffee or tea is produced.

K-Cup coffee and teas are offered in many different varieties. They come in boxes of 5 or 25 and store neatly on a shelf or in a drawer. Keurig even makes two great free-standing or wall-mounted display racks that hold either four or eight 25-pack boxes. Most boxes I have received indicate a "best by" date within several months of purchase. This should give even the least enthusastic coffee or tea drinker enough time to consume them at their peak of freshness. As someone whose family consumes a half-dozen boxes per month, this has never been a problem for us.

A box of 25 K-Cups costs $13.95, which is about 56¢ per cup. At the time of this writing, Keurig and some of the coffee roasters are offering free shipping on orders of 4 boxes or more. For budget-minded coffee drinkers, I have seen K-cups for as little as $9.95 per box (about 40¢ each) from third-party resellers. Many of these companies, however, charge significant shipping costs that can negate any savings or they may require large purchases to qualify for free shipping promotions. I have ordered most of my coffee and tea from Green Mountain and have always received my orders quickly.
