Keurig Coffee Maker Review - The Machine

"It's just a coffee maker," I said talking to a friend on the phone about his new Keurig. "What could be so special about it?" I have owned many coffee makers from cheap freebies to more expensive designer models. Most of them worked as promised but none of them were worth writing home about. That is, until I saw the Keurig.

Keurig B100 Control PanelStanding a little more than a foot tall, the Keurig B100 brewer's timeless black and stainless steel design makes a statement in almost any space. Behind it's apparent simplicity is one of the most technologically advanced coffee makers available. In fact, it's this simplicity that makes the Keurig stand head-and-shoulders above the rest.

The Keurig B100 brewer control panel on top has two LED's that indicated status: a green "ready" light and red "not ready" light. In the center is the large "brew" button, the only control other than the on/off switch on the back. The green and red LED's also indicate the status of the brewer:

Green Light
(Ready)
Solid Water is up to temperature or coffee is brewing.

Flashing The "brew" button is active because the brew drawer has been opened and closed.

4 Flashes & Beeps Stop pouring in water because the Keurig has reached full capacity.
Red Light
(Not Ready)
Solid The water reservoir is empty or is heating water.

Flashing The brewer may need to be de-scaled or may require other service.

The Keurig B100 has an attractive water level indicator bar up the front of the machine. This allows you to see, at a glance, how much water is available. The indicator bar glows deep blue which makes it a great night light. The indicator displays a flashing blue light when the water reservoir is empty.

Keurig B100 Brew DrawerThe brewer drawer, conveniently located below the control panel, holds one K-Cup at a time. The drawer opens and closes smoothly and feels very sturdy. The unopened K-cup sits securely in the drawer and is easily discarded after use.

The water fill area makes it easy to add water directly into the top of the machine. The self-closing lid keeps the area free of dust and a grate prevents anything large from accidentially getting into the water reservoir.

The on/off switch is located on the rear of the Keurig coffee maker. Keurig recommends that you do not turn off the brewer between uses, only turning it off if it will not be used for a long period of time (a week or more).
