Home Espresso Machines: Low-Cost Alternatives

If you’re considering a home espresso machine, there are some things to think about. First, what kind of espresso machine do you want? There’s the pump, steam, Moka pots, and the lever. Each one has its own unique qualities which is helpful to know before making a purchase.

Pump Espresso Machines

The pump espresso machine uses a pump to force hot water under pressure through coffee grounds. This type of home espresso machine comes in different pump sizes that produce different bars or the amount of pressure that is used to force the hot water through the coffee grounds. A good pump begins at 8 bars. These machines need to be cleaned to reduce mineral build-up to keep them running smoothly. They produce excellent espresso with little difficulty. There are various levels of automation. The fully-automatic does everything at the push of a button while the semi-automatic has a portafilter that you fill with espresso, tamp down snug, place into the brew group, and start the brew cycle. These range from thousands of dollars to a few hundred dollars and have manufacturers from several continents with many different lines and features to choose from.

Steam Espresso Machines

The steam powered home espresso machine heats water into steam to create pressure that extracts espresso. Although the machines are smaller and more sleek, the pressure is always strong enough for good espresso.

Lever and Piston Espresso Machines

The lever and piston home espresso machines operate on a lever and piston principle. Lifting the lever pulls hot water into the filter and depressing the lever force hot water under pressure through the coffee grounds. The espresso is then dispensed into your cup. There are fewer parts on this type of machine, espresso quality may vary, but it is a very quiet machine. There is a huge variety of lever machines to choose from. These are usually Italian made and come in different price ranges with different built-in features that are increasingly more elegant at the top of the line.

Moka Pots

The Moka Pot is simply stovetop pot that works on the perk idea. It has water in the bottom half. When heated, the water is forced into the top half of the pot to extract espresso. There is less pressure than other types of home espresso machines, it doesn’t have a built in frother, but it is also the least expensive of the models. These pots are easily stored as they do not require a dedicated spot in the kitchen, and can easily travel with you.

There is a good selection of home espresso makers in retail stores and even more online. Also online, you can get more detailed information on each model in a line, find out about the accessories that come with it which often includes an instructional video, and can provide you with an additional source of supplies to make home espresso machine experiences truly special. There are barista supplies, a variety of cups designed especially for espresso, and tons of espresso drink recipes. Are you ready to take the plunge and have some caffeinated fun?
